Weaning off the dummy
When’s the right time?
There’s no single “correct” age, most dentists suggest starting to wean between 2–4 years, before permanent teeth start coming through. Trust your instincts and your child’s readiness over any strict deadline.
Tips that help:
- Start with the easiest times of day (naps or car trips) before tackling bedtime
- Involve your child in the process, a “dummy fairy” or handing dummies to a younger baby can make it feel like their choice
- Keep bedtime routines consistent so the dummy isn’t the only thing signalling sleep
- Use Bluu on the dummy as a gentle, consistent deterrent while you work through the transition
Thumb & Finger Sucking
Why kids do it & how to help
Sucking is a natural, self-soothing reflex from infancy. Most children grow out of it on their own, but if it’s continuing past age 4–5 or affecting teeth alignment, it may be time for a nudge in the right direction.
Tips that help:
- Notice the triggers: tiredness, boredom, anxiety, and offer another comfort item at those moments (a soft toy or blanket)
- Praise progress rather than punishing lapses; positive reinforcement works better than negative attention
- Apply Bluu to the thumb or fingertip so the bitter taste interrupts the habit in the moment, without a fight
Nail Biting
Why it happens and how to help
Nail biting is often linked to stress, boredom or concentration, in both kids and adults. It’s rarely about anything more serious, but it can affect nail health and hygiene.
Tips that help:
- Keep nails trimmed short so there’s less to bite
- Identify the moments it happens most (homework, screen time) and try keeping hands busy with a fidget toy
- For adults, consider regular manicures or nail treats as a small incentive to let nails grow
- A spray of Bluu on the nails gives an instant bitter-taste reminder to stop
Every child is different, and there’s no fixed timeline for breaking a habit. Consistency matters more than speed; small, repeated moments of “not this time” add up. If you need support along the way, our team is always happy to help.
